3 Bookkeeping Reports to Read Each Month

As the new year gets underway, it’s a good time to build a habit that pays off all year long: actually reading your financial reports every month, not just pulling them together once a year for taxes. Today, we’re sharing three reports worth putting on your monthly calendar, along withwhat to watch for in each. Swipe through to see what they are.

Profit and Loss (P&L) Statement
This report shows your revenue, expenses, and net income over the month, answering the most basic question in business: Did you make money? Its real value comes from comparison. Look at it against prior months, the same period last year, or your budget, since that’s usually where the real story shows up.

Cash Flow Statement
Remember that profit and cash aren’t the same; a business can be profitable on paper and still struggle to cover payroll or bills if cash is tied up elsewhere. This report tracks money moving in and out, making it one of the clearest early warning signs of a cash crunch before it becomes a crisis.

Balance Sheet
This is a snapshot of what your business owns, owes, and has built in equity at a specific moment in time. A business can look profitable on the P&L and still be under real financial pressure. If debt is climbing, receivables are slow, or cash is thin, this is where that pressure shows up.
